The City of Sydney's Chinese New Year Festival was officially launched at Belmore Park on Friday.I wasn't able to stick around for the speeches and official proceedings, but a quick whip around the park revealed several food stalls and lots of New Year trinkets and toys for the kids. As always I'm looking forward to the Chinese New Year Parade this Sunday. This colourful spectacle with dragon dancing, lions and those infectious adrenalin-inducing drums, will wind its way from Town Hall, snake through Chinatown, and finish at the Entertainment Centre forecourt. Studded with imposing edifices, long lean Martin Place was closed to traffic in 1971, forming a terraced pedestrian mall complete with fountains and areas for public gatherings. It's the closest thing to a main civic square that Sydney has. GPO Sydney, a beautiful colonnaded sandstone Victorian palazzo, is located at 1 Martin Pl. 5 Martin Place was Australia’s first steel-framed ‘skyscraper’. The State Savings Bank building at number 48 is a beaut of an example of interwar beaux-arts architecture. The central pathway through the park is stunning, lined with beautiful fig-trees that provide a natural canopy for the walkway. In the very center of Hyde Park, visitors flock to the Archibald Fountain, commemorating the collaboration of France and Australia during World War I. Carved statues of figures from Greek mythology grace the fountain, which was named for John F. Archibald, founding editor of the Australian weekly newspaper, The Bulletin.
