June 2018: Newly Visited Nearby Cafes & Bars in Singapore
June is the official sixth month of the year, and interestingly enough, it has the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the day with the most daylight hours, and the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the day with the fewest daylight hours. June is also known by most people because of Father's Day. Did you know that June is the only month of the year that no month begins on the same day of the week? Enough about June trivia, as this month’s newly visited coffee places and hang out waste-your-time chatting places are here – good for brunch, early afternoon coffee conversations, and study places, and weekday go to places for you.  We all know that the hunt for the best brunch spots in town will always be a thing in Singapore, because yes, everyone here takes their coffee and cafes seriously, and no one is feeling lazy for doing so.  For the month of June, here are the places you can and should enjoy your cuppa joes!

The TWO bakers TYB ($13.80) was a pulled pork sandwich made from tau yu bak (braised pork in soy sauce) served on ciabatta and topped with a sunny side up. The pork meat was extremely tender and moist and in fact it was almost effortless to chew it. It was also redolent of a robust braising sauce. While I didn’t think the fried egg made any difference to the sandwich (I’d probably prefer braised hard-boiled eggs that are diced up and mixed with the pork), I did enjoy the runny yolk. I mean, who doesn’t right? The fries (seemed freshly cut) were just seasoned in salt and pepper and overall tasted a little weak but there were chilli sauce and ketchup to help ourselves to so they were still alright. The side salad of rocket leaves was just tossed in balsamic vinaigrette. I really enjoyed this dish because of its fusion factor. Normally we’d eat tau yu bak with steamed bun (as in kong bak bao) but would never think of combining it with ciabatta to make it into a western delight. Surprisingly, it really worked beautifully. Did I also mention the ciabatta bread was airy, pillowy and really soft with a slight chew? This is a sandwich I’d come back for. Sun Ray Café is one of the nominees for Best Café. While it is possibly the most unknown or smallest in scale amongst all in the list, this little café at Serangoon Garden Estate has left very positive impressions for my co-judge Chef Judy Koh and me. We were secretly rooting for it, though it didn’t win in the end. One of Sun Ray’s biggest appeals is that it is pets-friendly (NEA-licensed). The café is divided into two main rooms – the left for pets with their owners, and the other, well for just the humans. So if you happen to be allergic to say animal-fur, the cafe is divided into two parts. Some came with their children, some spent their afternoons away typing on their laptop. Getting to its location at Brighton Crescent posed to be quite a bit of a challenge, a number of bus stops away from Serangoon Central, in the middle of rich men’ terrace houses. But I am glad I finally made it there. Read the full review here: http://danielfooddiary.com/2013/11/29/sunraycafe/

The ambiance of the two storey establishment is impeccably executed. The peeling and flaking walls are perfectly imperfect, while lamps with industrial accents add a cool glow to the space. Furniture, cutlery, and even the staff belonged. The 1925 Brewing Co. is a that watering hole that’s so much more than about getting tipsy with your friends. It’s a place to enjoy everything there is about craft beer. The food and cocktails have been created around the flavours of the beers, with some using the beers themselves and even byproducts of the brewing process. Not all the beers brewed at The 1925 Brewing Co. are made the same. With some having attained a level of exclusivity because of the ingredients used, and made only available once a year. Cafes have become the opposite of quaint and idyllic, most of them have long queues, people snapping photos and are filled with too many people for comfort. Thankfully, we found this gem of a cafe offering us absolute peace and quiet on a weekday afternoon. With one of the largest selection of premium teas I have ever seen in any cafe, you’ll be set for a comfortable afternoon on one of Carry On cafe’s lounge chairs with a good book in your hands.  We recommend the London Fog ($6), an earl grey latte with hints of coconut milk and lavender. The drink had the full bodied flavor of earl grey without it being overpowered by the coconut milk, perfectly balanced and comforting for the soul. If you’re an avid fan of Korean variety shows and dramas, you’d be familiar with Dal.komm Coffee. This cafe first made its appearance in episode 249 on Running Man before appearing a couple of times in the hit drama – Descendants of the Sun. The love story between a soldier and a doctor was so captivating that viewerships soared sky-high for this drama. The highly remembered scene at Dal.komm Coffee must be in episode 2 of DOTS, where Kang Mo-Yeon and Yoo Shi-Jin broke up without having really been together. The other popular scene is in episode 6 where Dal.komm Coffee appeared as part of a flashback scene when Yoon Myeong-Joo and Seo Dae-Young were happily dating. The Food With a Kitchen at the back of the café, the food menu is not huge but sufficient enough, with casual selections such as sandwiches, pastas and sides like fries with beef bolognese and crispy chicken wings. We also tried the Drip (S$4) coffee, which I personally enjoyed more. I had the Speakeasy blend, a mix of Brazil and Guatemala coffee this season which is medium-bodied and has a nice balance of cocoa and nuts flavours. Will I Return Again? What’s not to love about good coffee, moreover a local brand? The café scene has visibly slowed down the past one year and it’s a case of the survival of the fittest. Liberty coffee definitely has the means to last through, at least we enjoyed the coffee. Nowadays when cafes are really a dime a dozen, and there are more cafes opening than we have weekends to visit, knowing the good vs the average will help you save time and money. Group Therapy Cafe strikes me as having stood the test of time, although I think the quality dished out at their Duxton Hill branch is better than of the Katong V branch. I was wondering if I would see familiar faces at the Katong V branch, but I did not on my visit some weeks back. The look and feel of this Katong V branch is quite different. At Katong V, Group Therapy Cafe is located at the basement, which is a bit surprising since most cafes are about ambience, natural lighting etc. Still, if you’re not there to take a gazillion food photos, the lighting probably wouldn’t bother you like it bothered me. Ambience at Supply & Demand is one of the highlights. Industrial chic meets faux greenery, with an eclectic mix of furnishings that resemble both a European countryside home, as well as a streetside cafe.
