May 2018: 13 Nearby Cafes and Bars in Singapore That You Would Want to Visit More Than Once

May 2018: 13 Nearby Cafes and
Bars in Singapore
May is the month of spring (and
Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere), and it’s all about summer vacations and
Labor Day weekends. Whatever the month-long observances, we may need to take
some time off our busy schedules and enjoy some of the nearby best kept hangout
spots where you can appreciate some of the finest cappuccinos and brunch grubs
around Singapore. What I really like about Singapore is that there will always
be cool cafes that you can capture. It seems to me that some of the weekend
visits would not require you to open any VSCO or Snapseeds, because these
coffee and bar places got you and your Instagram story feed covered. On your
next trip, check out these places, at least once, for some virtuous food and
truly good coffee!

The stand-out dishes to me were the Hakka Gnocchi ($24.00) and
Chicken Rice ($26). The Spaghetti ($24) was probably a safe appetising choice,
though I also hoped the dish had a more characteristic name. The former was a
likeable update to the familiar “Suan Pan Zi”. The different colours represent
the ingredients of beetroot, sweet potato, yam, purple sweet potato, each with
its own character and subtle difference (oh, imagine the effort that went into
making them). Cooked with dried shrimp, foie gras and cured pork, I also liked
how it was “Asian” and presented in an elegant-European way. You may go

Previously located at the old
Dakota estate, Tian Kee & Co has reopened a new takeaway outlet at 46
Siglap Drive, off Frankel Avenue. For those of you who are not familiar with
Tian Kee & Co, it started as a local provision shop back in 1958 and it
evolved into a bakery cafe at Dakota Crescent—one of Singapore’s oldest public
housing estates. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood had to make way in late 2016
due to developments under Mountbatten’s estate renewal plans, and so did Tian
Kee & Co. The wait is finally over, Tian Kee & Co is now back in the
East of Singapore. You

To-gather Cafe is the most unknown
yet famous cafe that we have come across. We had never heard of To-gather Cafe
until just a couple of days ago, when their name popped up in our research for
nice brunch cafes in the east. Yet their Facebook page has almost 24k likes as
at the date of this review. We and our friends were shocked at the sheer number
of fans on their page, given their presumed obscurity. Even the very famous
cafes in Singapore struggle to break 5k fans, and few really get past 10k fans.
We were eager to unravel the mystery of how To-gather Cafe did it in less than
2 years of operations. So why do they have so many fans? They have many
incredibly unique and delicious signature dishes – Mexican Quesadilla, Grilled
Pandan Chicken Chop, Pork Cordon Bleu – and they also have some really super
delicious lava cakes – the Matcha Lava Cake (matcha is green tea powder) and
their Chocolate Lava Cake! You may go

The restaurant itself is quite
small and seats are limited- there is a bit of a crowd you will have to tackle
at the buffet corners. Due to the number of guests, some basic utensils might
run out fast; I had trouble finding a sauce plate or chopsticks for my sashimi.
Overall, Cafe 2000 provides a essential spread of buffet items, featuring the
major favorites including fresh seafood and grilled meats. The crabs were also
quite well cooked and is something to try. You may go ahead and

Lion Industrial Building is a
cluster of buildings near MacPherson MRT Station, and Block C is situated at
the end of the compound. The shop itself is a shared space between 20grams
Specialty Coffee and Roastery and Malcolm Bistro, which faces away from the
road at the back of the building. Such a location keeps it hidden away from
sight, perhaps only known to the office workers in the area or those who might
have heard the slightest of its existence in the building. 20grams Specialty
Coffee and Roastery is open throughout the operating hours of the bistro,
serving up only a very limited menu of light bites and savoury food with coffee
and tea, while Malcolm Bistro offers set lunches and set dinner menu that is
only made available upon reservation. The bistro is dimly-lit, while the
interior is furnished with mirrors and decked in mostly black and marble
elements which add to the sense of mystery behind this hidden spot. You may go ahead and

We just completed another
successful event! This time at Singapore Coffee Festival 2017 (4-6 Aug)! We
showcased our new bright and colourful packaging "MO", and we are
proud that it was tremendously well received. This year, we came out with a
curated menu at Singapore Coffee Festival, pairing our coffee with the best
Asian flavours to craft artisan coffee drinks. We are really excited about the
success of our menu, and will be looking at how we can offer more of these
drinks in the future. You may go

Shokuhin dining concept, that covers everything from wagyu to gyoza alongside
its sizeable live seafood and aged beef market, Umi + Vino is a seafood and
wine bar for people who enjoy both those things together. You’ll find the usual
suspects on such a menu — seafood platters, fresh oysters, red and white wines
from major growers — but it does also hold a number of real gems. Namely,
Yamazaki 18 Years, Hibiki 21 Years “Mount Fuji” Limited Edition, Nikka
Taketsuru 21 Years and Yoichi 10 Years, to name a few. You may go

With all its ice cream prepared
in-house and made from scratch, founder and owner Stanley Seow calls Sugarhaus
a place “where happiness is homemade”. the 30-year-old banker-turned-food
entrepreneur with a passion for all things savoury and sweet is on the go of
experimenting with different flavour combinations. Fix your sweet tooth with a
single scoop of ice cream that goes for $3.50++. Would rather indulge yourself
in quirky flavours instead? Don’t fret and get Sugarhaus’ premium flavours at
$4.30++ per scoop. We suggest going with The Dutch Chocolate if you are
clueless on which flavour is good. It is made with a smooth blend of different
types of chocolates and appears as one of the best-selling flavours on its
menu. Else, you might look to try new flavours such as the Sour Cherry (made
with amarena cherries imported from Italy) and the Hibiscus Yogurt. You may go

1-Altitude boasts a panoramic 360-degree view
of Singapore, with seats around the edges of the top floor building. I’ve to
say the hard straw seats are not entirely comfortable, while many patrons might
choose to just stand around as well, since they have been sitting at their
desks the whole day. The open space and glass barriers provide a full view of
the cityscape while the sun ducks below the skyscrappers for that picturesque
golden hour. Sadly I didn’t get to experience sunset but I got to see another equally
mesmerizing view. You may go ahead and

The eggs and French Toast were served after a
wait of about 10 minutes. They came simply presented and were of the expected
standard. The French Toast was served without maple syrup even though we had
asked for the syrup when we made the order. We got the syrup after a second
reminder to the staff. We had almost finished the food served and there was
still no sign of the Scotch Egg. We told a staff about it and he went to check.
He came back to say that the Scotch Egg would be served in another 3 minutes or
so. A few minutes passed and another staff came by to say the dish would take
another 5 minutes. He was very pleasant and apologetic and we were quite happy
to wait another 5 minutes. The Scotch Egg was eventually served some 20 minutes
after the nice and rather good looking gentlemen came by to say “another 5
minutes”. By that time my face was as glum as that of the lady in the painting overlooking
our table. Was the Scotch Egg worth the wait? You may go ahead and read the full review here: https://ordinarypatrons.com/2015/11/02/rabbit-carrot-gun/
