Tromsø Kaffebrenneri – Nerstranda Cafe

Perfect for romantic dates and road trips – people always utter such things when they think of cafes and coffee places in a quaint city. But I beg to disagree; Tromsø is distinctive. After learning about the background of this newest and nicest coffee shop in Tromsø known as the Tromsø Kaffebrenneri, I wanted to hang out at this place, and maybe even have a 1:1 coffee chat with the Norwegian entrepreneur who founded this place, Frei Rønningsbakk.

One fine Nordic morning, our troop decided to get our early dose of caffeine somewhere nearby our hotel. The fastest and easiest place to locate this was in the Nerstranda Shopping, and of course, being the persistent coffee follower that I am (already had one cup early that day, thank you convenience store coffee!), I knew we needed to find another coffee drink that is local in nature. Good thing, the Tromso Kaffebrenneri was in sight to save the sleepy eyes. Frei Rønningsbakk’s passion could be felt in the way the overall café was built to perfection. The coffee drinks, the bakery food choices, and the different brands, both in-house and others, are far and wide, considering that this coffee place has only been into existence since 2011.

As I sat in one corner, I noticed that the white-minimalist styled café sits perfectly in the close middle of the mall’s ground floor. It wasn’t a super show stopper at first, but the locals are very much familiar with their coffee favorite, so you can immediately see the constant line-up of people buying their to-go coffee. Okay, we were actually the only ones who decided to dine in during this time, so maybe this was just as being Asians or it wasn’t really a custom for Nordics to sit and sip in coffee places like this one.

Not too odd to observe though, but the barista here was extra chatty and friendly, which is, of course, a good thing. He was very much welcoming with our questions, especially about the café and coffee scene in Norway, and much more about the background of the beans available at their coffee shop. He also showed interest in explaining to us the process that comes with the fine art of coffee brewing. Lol. Such a nice Nordic chap made all the coffee experience here a good one overall. This place is a definite recommendation for those folks and blokes looking for casual no frills but really good coffee and company. It surely stands out as a better alternative for the likes of Starbucks in my opinion.
