The Café Sperl: BEST Local Cafe in Vienna, Austria
Vienna’s calendar of events kicks into high gear almost every season, with many important local and international events and big cultural festivities taking place; but, this does not stop people from visiting this traditional Viennese cafe at Gumpendorfer Straße 11 in the Mariahilf sixth district of Vienna, Austria. The Café Sperl is one of my all time favourite cafes I have ever visited in my entire coffee exploration. This 1880 established coffee shop is listed in the Austrian Register of Historic Places.

Originally known as the Café Ronacher in 1880, Jacob Ronacher built this strategically located corner cafe that is obviously reminiscent of Vienna's elegant Ringstraßen-Cafés. You’d notice the details that look a lot like the ones you’d see in palaces - with parquet floors, bentwood chairs, marble tables, crystal chandeliers and crumble billiards tables. You may have seen this in the 1995 movie Before Sunrise, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, with its dramatic daily highlight.
Surrounded by contemporary and new shops, advancements, and ideas, you’d be glad to see this quietly and elegantly still standing strong. Found our selves the very first customer of this cafe one quiet Monday morning in April, and it was everything you’d ever hope for in a cafe: excellent selection of food, lots of coffee choices, and a really nice atmosphere (to perhaps discover your talent as authors, artists, architects, composers, musicians and actors?) Dreams and ideas would no doubt flourish in this place.

As the crowd slowly filled the place, I could sense that this is one of the ultimate places in Vienna that allows you to transport back to the old-town-charmed Vienna, without feeling out-dated. The coffee itself breathes life out of you, with its rich and distinctive taste. Not to mention the other selection of food, be it for brunch, pastries, or something to go. The interesting mixes of people, locals and foreigners, as well as regular customers, seem to enjoy spending considerable number of hours here. I would not wonder why – the Café Sperl is a stop worth adding in your own calendar of events.
