Czech Republic Watch: Prague’s Astronomical Clock in Old Town is Timeless
Prague’s Astronomical Clock
I know I’m jumping the gun when I go straight and focus on the Astronomical clock first, among many other things to highlight in Prague. But man, this one is old school so cool. I really have never encountered such craftsmanship. When they invented the “Time is Gold” catchphrase, they were probably thinking about this one ‘cos it sure looks golden!
The Prague Astronomical Clock, also known as the Prague Orloj, stands out in the middle of the busy Old Town in Prague and I could stare at it all day. It’s that fascinating – like the Sagrada Familia level of magnificence, but this one is time bound. Hahaha This clock is still fully operating, and has been here since 1410. It’s the third oldest astronomical clock in the world! This one is a form of mechanical astrolabe, which is basically a device used in medieval astronomy. It shows the standing Earth and skies, with zodiacal ring, and outer rotating ring, an icon representing the sun, and an icon representing the moon. I recommend that if you are planning to visit Prague anytime soon, do check out the Astronomical clock, whether you have time or not. Because it sure is one of those travel highlights show stoppers.
