Assembly Coffee, Evans Lodge

The Assembly Coffee in Evans Lodge, Bukit Timah is like a nightclub for morning people. Everything is busy and everyone is happy - in broad daylight! - on a quiet Sunday early afternoon! The cordial café lighting, the surround sound common chatters, and the regular mini queuing within the coffee shop – are indicative of the café’s favored prominence. Should we question that? N.O.

The Assembly Coffee is a ten-minute walk from the Botanical Garden MRT Station. It’s right in front of the Ministry of Education and just beside the Wine Company, Hatched, and a local hawker center. The area is more or less isolated from the CBD scene, so it’s quiet surprising to enter a café where everyone seems to know everybody. The best time to go here is during weekend afternoons, where the coffee-barista action is!

You will be greeted by the biggest number of baristas you’ll ever find in your lifetime. It’s like they have their own city and population count over here. It’s a good thing though, because the quality of service here is in hyper mode – so fast lah. The small square of a café is pure people – in the common table: full of people, couples table: full of people, small groups area: full of people. There are social groups, expat families, girlfriends and dude groups, and college kids – it’s a microcosm of Singapore, in a café culture sense.

Then of course: coffee and waffles. The coffee drink is nearly too sweet, but the aftertaste of chocolate makes everything at ease. The salted caramel waffle and earl gray waffles are the best sellers, and no one can argue with that. Not too sweet, not too salty, and not too caramel strong. No one wants to die of diabetes, yes?

We all stick to our circle of competence for a very good reason, and that’s exactly what the Assembly coffee is all about. Clearly, they know that they are more than competent enough when it comes to creating a good café culture on their own. Their consistent coffee and community speaks volumes about their coffee place, and anyone who’s into a busy coffee scene and learn a thing or two about Singapore’s coffee culture, this is the place to be.
