Rome Travel Photo Essay: Will You Toss A Coin into the Trevi?
At some point in our lives, we
believed in superstition. (Yes, you got that right, Santa
Claus.)
Some absurd, some hopeful, some
significant. Superstition
is the belief in the supernatural -that one-event leads to the cause of
another. Maybe true, maybe placebo. But what if it’s a superstition saying that
if you throw a coin in a fountain, you’ll most certainly get the chance to go
back at that place?
And so it has been told that a coin
thrown into the Trevi
Fountain in Rome,
is said to ensure the comeback to the city, two coins thrown ensure romance
with a Roman, either male or female, and three coins thrown ensure the marriage
with him or her. And this tradition has surpassed generations, dating back to
the 19th century. And up until today, you’ll see a ton of people,
all throwing coins in this mystic-looking fountain that’s even more beautiful
at night.
Good thing though is that the coins
are collected daily to finance a special supermarket that serves the poor in
Rome with the help from the Italian
Red Cross. Whether you get to come back or marry a Roman, the more
important thing is that you get to help people whether you believe it or not.
