Department of Caffeine, Duxton Road

Department
of Caffeine at Duxton Road
Don’t you
find it fascinating to see people get lost in writing when in coffee
shops? The way they scribble and look away into the horizon, with
pensive eyes and compelling exhales. It’s like they’re in a trance with time
and texts, just enjoying every moment. Classic, right?
So I said
to myself, at one point in my café hopping stint here in Singapore, this one
should be crossed out in my chivalrous classic bucket list. The Department
of Caffeine at Duxton
Road is the best choice for this act. It has a distinctive local
character that can inspire some scribbling, and maybe in the process, dig out a
few more brilliant ideas.

Getting
here is not as convenient as the nearer cafes in Tanjong Pagar, but it's worth
the find. From the Tanjong Pagar
MRT Station, this corner cafe is a good twelve-minute walk.
Once you reach the Duxton Road sign post, it's less than 100 steps, and you'll
notice a small yet authoritative signboard that says "Department of
Caffeine". It’s nearer if you’re coming from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple too. Best
time to go here are during the weekday unholy afternoon hours, where
there's just the right amount of people hanging around the coffee shop.

Its
approach is leaning towards the modern minimalist kind of cafe, and
it’s more like an awesome bachelor's place, seeing all the black, gray, and
brown wooden fixtures. What makes it a classic place for some soulful writing
though is the coffee fixes the D.O.C. offers. Caffe Mocha, first
sip and I'm already sold - started scribbling so much thought, I almost forgot
I had to leave early. And that’s just coffee, wait till you try out their
pastries, and meals. The coffee art here is also one of the most precise styles
I’ve seen in quite a while, and this normally signals the quality of the
upcoming coffee sip that's about to happen. True enough, it’s just that.
The
Department of Caffeine cafe is one of those coffee shops in Singapore that
would take your imagination to places, because of the guaranteed good coffee
time you’ll have over here. No wonder it is the preferred place for young
expats and locals alike, staying here for long hours just to chill, to chat,
and for some, to write.
