The Little Prince Café in Somme Road
The Little Prince Café in Somme Road
Taking a quick coffee break from all the French inspired posts, to focus on a cup of caffeine that's kinda still French but Singaporean. Completely forgot how much I admired Antoine de Saint Exupery's work, not until I saw a boa constrictor in Somme Road. One’s childhood wouldn’t be complete if they haven’t read this book - his legendary book The Little Prince has been one of the all-time favorites of young folks and it has been one of the books I read and reread during my high school years. Fast forward to the present, having this Little Prince Café around just brings back good old memories.
Just overlooking a small park in Farrer Park, a small and elementary cafe can be seen in one of the stores at the ground floor of a scruffy building. Sitting all white and glassy, the relaxing Singaporean crowd would give it away as a cafe. The best time to go here is during quite weekend afternoon when everyone is flocking the rest of Serangoon and Mustafa Center, you can just hide and enjoy the quaintness of this small world.
It seems like this coffee house has been peeled off from the story book itself. The walls, all whitewashed and sketched with some ideas from the book, looks interesting and reminding, especially to people who read the book. The books found here are meshed with the rest of the cafe, different sizes, translations, and interpretations. From a Japanese pop-out book, to a European translated video, to stuffed toys, and paper dolls - the place plays the part of the Le Petit. The coffee and light foods are also the highlights of this quaint cafe. The barista neatly prepared the best hot cappuccino in this area, with must carefulness and creative foam brilliance. Taste and quality wasn’t compromised at all.
Having a cup of your favorite joe, while reading your used-to-be favorite book is one of those few instances that will make you feel good for no profound or logical reason at all. It just is. So simple yet so favorite worthy. Can’t quite forget how much genius is put into the logo of this cafe – It’s a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant - one of the interesting parts of the story book.
