Profanity Obsession in Limmatquai, Zurich
Profanity Obsession in Limmatquai
Have you ever been in a situation where you got so caught up by
the moment that the only sensibility that you can muster turns out to be a
complete nonsense? I found myself so tremendously dumbfounded at the sight of Limmatquai in Zürich,
to the point that the only reasonable choruses coming out of my mouth are out
of profanity and rubbish. Felt like the only thing missing is drool coming out of my mouth, and some sign saying "Travel Newbie". True story. The Limmatquai
is the prominent street in Zürich's Old Town that
links Bellevue and Central along the right-hand waterfront
of the pristine Limmat River. It’s one of
the first and main scenic highlights you’ll see in Zürich.
Good thing about Limmatquai
is that not only is it easy to locate, it is difficult to avoid the place. It’s
one of the most famous streets in Zürich. The best way to
go and enjoy is by foot, where you
get to stroll around the area, and really rivet yourself into the different
covers of window panes, and vintage-inspired structures along the river side.
Enjoy the many trams passing through this area, which adds more contemporary
day-to-day kind of character.
So much history was built upon this area, dating back to as
early as the 19th century.
If you’ve heard of quais and guild houses, then this is where you’ll
find some of the best and oldest bunch across all of Europe. A quai is the area
of a city alongside a body of water. Read: harbor or dockyard. A guild house,
on the other hand, is either a town hall, or a building historically used by
guilds for meetings and other purposes. Some of the famous historic guild
houses you can find along the area are Zunfthaus
zur Zimmerleuten, Zunfthaus zur Haue,Zunfthaus zum Rüden and Zunfthaus zur
Saffran. You can literally see
the majority of all Zürich sites by walking
around this area, half day worth of walking tour and you’re all good.
I see this as the perfect place to start one’s exploration of the narrow, charming streets of the Old Town. The perfect place to be at a loss for sensible words, in a good way, that is. It’s an old town, but it also exudes some relevancy to the present, given all the people and culture that gets drawn in this place. Limmatquai is certainly one of those historical whereabouts where you wouldn’t mind getting lost and getting obsessed with.
