Go Back in Time with Kirche St Peter in Zurich, Switzerland
Go Back in Time with Kirche St Peter
There’s something about old churches that makes me go back in
time. It’s like being swallowed up by history and next thing, it’s reliving the
life of priests, and saints, and countrymen who’ve walked the church’s halls
and experienced culture, history, and time. Old school museums may have
historic artifacts in it, but timeworn churches are THE historic artifacts in
itself; and, it certainly is the best way to learn and experience more about a
place’s beliefs and cultures. The Church of St. Peter, the oldest church
in the city of Zurich,
can sure heave one back in time – a time and place that seems to only exist in nostalgia.
This late Romanesque-Gothic
inspired Church is located on the St. Peter’s paddock, which is one of
the most charismatic places I’ve ever laid my eyes on. It can effortlessly
command goose bumps from anyone who’d see it. It’s the largest church clock in
the whole of Europe and everything else blurs out into existence – the baroque
basilica seems like a cutout from a history book. The most convenient way to go
here is by foot, during weekday
mid-afternoons, where Zurich life is at the
backdrop of this centerfold vista.
Even the yellow leaves and raw cold air makes the whole Kirche
St Peter seem even more surreal. From the outside, the iconic steeple
highlights everything else. From the inside, the organ sets the whole
picture-perfect tone of the church. Chandelier, staircase, and wood. It’s one
of those rare marvels that make you play a tune in your head, while an
interpretation of heaven slowly form right before thy very eyes. I see history,
I hear time, I feel great.
This kirche is good not just for religious events and experiences, but also for other personal highlights. The whole parish is preserved to romantic perfection, and finding it inside the old town of Zurich just makes it even more remarkable. It makes you feel like everything’s going back in time, and this time, you get to bring the whole epiphany back to reality.
