Face off with the Fraumünster in Zurich, Switzerland
Face off with the Fraumünster
Finally putting a close to this outstanding year in a few days’
time and giving the last church series of Zurich
over here. This instant favorite city of Switzerland is the first stop in this epic Europe travel, and can I just say
that I can’t imagine any other way to complete Zurich travel other than doing a
faceoff with the Fraumünster. Next to the Kirche
St. Peter and the Grossmunster,
the Fraumünster or the Minster of Our Lady
is one of Zurich’s church exemplars.
This church, which is built on the remains of a former
abbey for aristocratic women,
is found in the Stadthausquai.
The most graceful and prominent clock tower can be seen even from afar, all
slender and blue. The best way to get here is by foot, starting from the lovely
Münsterhof
square or even from the Grossmünster
that’s just across the Münsterbrücke.
It’s easily distinguishable because its noticeable spire is the acme
in this side of town. I recognize the value of how the early morning sunlight
makes the whole Fraumünster landscape a picture-perfect one.
Reading about Romanesque
style versus seeing it in real life is anything but unreal. From the
Romaneque choir, a Gothic nave, and a series of frescoes, the basilica is one
beautiful work of faith. The stained-glass windows by Giacometti
and Marc Chagall,
with blues and greens, reds and yellows representing different symbols of
heavens and religious zeal, are the most striking I’ve ever seen across Zurich.
These Chagall windows represent five important works known across Switzerland:
from Prophets, Jacob, Christ, Zion, and Law, each representing an important
Christian story, made immortal through the stained glass windows. The quietness
of the church and the immaculate patterns of the windows make the whole faceoff
with Fraumünster an incredible chance.
Wasn’t that particular with frescos not until I found the one in the Fraumünster by Paul Bodmer. If Michaelangelo is to Italy, then Paul Bodmer is probably to Switzerland. This world renowned Swiss painter indeed captured the whole mark and founding in the cloister of the Fraumünster abbey. The depictions, details, and illustrations found in these old religious paintings are outrageously great – like seeing paintings found in the Louvre. World class awesome.
