Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh

Ahhh, Cambodia - the country shrouded with so much saga. It’s a place that seems like a cutout from all those legendary, ancient, and prehistoric stories. One such example would be the Wat Phnom, a place that will transport you to an ancient native saga of heroes and gods. A place where every serpent can talk, and trees can move. A place where mortals mingle with immortals. And yes okay that’s a little over the top! On to the pictures then. But did you know that Wat Phnom appeared on the Travel Channel documentary, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die? See. Saga.

Also coined as the Mountain Pagoda, this famous Buddhist temple is actually the tallest religious structure in Phnom Penh. Even from a far, you’ll notice how the red orange and strong stone color commands reverence from people who notice it. When you reach the Wat Phnom, the first thing you’ll see are the mythical-like serpents. Seven heads to be exact. Then there are Buddha structures and stairs, and monks. Then you have rituals and cameras and different races, learning to appreciate the place. A mixture of tales and truths. It’s a beautiful travel present to uncover. And that’s just the outside.

It’s a completely different story once you’re inside. From ceiling to walls, everything is embellished with stories. Stories through elaborate paintings, golden statues, and ornate pillars. You’ll also see barefooted people praying and kneeling down to pay their respects to the sacred place. Personal favorite: the Buddha figures and the shrine itself are the images that you will relish forever. Take a thoughtful stroll, learn the Buddhist rituals, see the art – there are so many cultural things to do when you visit Wat Phnom. Experiencing this Phnom Penh legend for yourself will certainly give new a whole new story to share.
