The National Monument in Jakarta, Indonesia
The National Monument in Jakarta
So the most boring travel entry goes to the National Monument. Nah. But oftentimes, we automatically assume boredom when we hear “monuments”. It’s just structure and architecture with added hype. Maybe. But for Indonesia’s case, the National Monument is anything but boring.
The most convenient way to reach this place is via local taxis. Be sure to take the Blue Bird ones as these are the safest and honest group among the bunch. Yep, been there-done that kind of horror stories are just not a great adventure to have, so better be safe and sure.
Now once you’re there, it definitely is all about the national day vibe, all you need is a flag and a parade! Everything about the National Monument screams freedom and nationalism. It’s a great reminder of how far Indonesia progressed. The country is still a big work in progress BUT hey, we can’t deny the manifesting improvement and dedication that transcends in this place.
The area is wide and far reaching. Centered in this vast space full of visible skyscrapers is this tower, with an eternal flame on top. This tower, which symbolizes the fight for Indonesia, has been here since the 1960s. These Indonesian folks wanted a tower that’s comparable to the Eiffel Tower, and so there they went building this place. Tower. Goblet. And fire. Comparable enough? Perhaps. But, the rich history behind this is more solid than the tower itself.
You’ll know all of it once you enter the National History Museum which is just inside the tower. Full of intricate dioramas about colonialism and independence. This can be found at the foot of the tower, first layer to be exact. Next interesting thing for history junkies would have to be the Hall of Independence, which is at the goblet part of the monument. Here you’ll have to drink up with more history and culture. You’ll see symbolisms and others. Interesting to see: Indonesian archipelago coated in gold.
Last interesting piece of this Monumen Nasional is the Observation deck and the Flame of Independence, which gives you a super high preview of the city. This bronze Flame of Independence shines brightly and Indonesians are so proud to have it. Tops the city’s skyline and proves how much “fire” they have for their country. It’s a good reminder to them that freedom is like fire: passionate and rousing. Be sure to get a glimpse of Indonesia’s pride once you visit the metropolitan. Not only will you be fired up about experiencing more about their country, you’ll even benefit from the diverse dioramas and different vistas around the place.
