Double Coffee in Riga, Latvia: Espresso, Cappuccino, and Bar Favorites
Double
Coffee in Riga, Latvia
Riga, Latvia is a surprise to me, particularly its coffee
scene. While walking along
the unsaturated streets of Riga on a lazy weekend afternoon, I stumbled upon
this casual yet aristocratic looking coffee house. Double Coffee, with its overcooked donut like logo, was founded in 2002 and is pretty
international, since it has a total of 15 locations in Riga alone, and it also
has several coffee shops based in Azerbaijan,
Belarus, China, Estonia, Lithuania, and Ukraine. It has
also won Best Trader in Riga, Latvia, and dubbed as the Best Restaurant Franchise in Latvia, with more than 17 MILLION
visitors. Needless to say, it wouldn’t hurt to add to that number and spend one
afternoon here as a traveler, right? Yes,
that’s what I thought too.
As soon as I entered this woody-hipster espresso cappuccino bar, I felt at home right away. I
could smell the delicious Java and joe drinks ordered by the group, who were
nice millennial locals curiously staring at an Asian traveler (ie. me). Too
hungry from all the walking, I waited for my buddies to sit down with me and
order their food choices – sandwiches, breakfast food, and all the delicious eastern and western European foods. Everything looked
appetizing, not because we were hungry like a wild animal, but because the food
presented on the glossy magazine-like
menu was so mouthwatering.
They
are all about decent coffee.
Good thing they spoke good English
and they understood our Asian accent,
because they got all our orders right, even on the smallest of details – iced coffee,
hot coffee, double shots, less milk, and what have you. The food, also, was
very tasty, presented on huge plates
with big servings for sharing. The attentive
staffs were courteous and so friendly (which I heard is uncommon in Riga)
enough in recommending all the delicious specials, even if they weren’t flagged
as specials on their menu.
Ended up spending a few hours here just
enjoying the food and the vibe of the place, not worrying too much on where we
needed to go afterwards, since it’s a
few steps away from the historic center and a famous national monument. If I am okay to guess, perhaps this
place’s their pioneer coffee house? For me, it’s always the oldest, the
grandest, the busiest, or in this case – the best vibe? Okay, I hope my guess
is correct, because this branch of the Double Coffee gives that distinctive atmosphere
worthy of being called a winning place. So yes, do yourself a favor and add a
few more counts to that 17 million and drop by at this place.
