No surprise here, I have risen from my more than a weeklong blog slumber, mainly because I was in one of the best cities that I have visited in recent years: Vancouver, British Columbia. Hello guys, how are you all doing? Yes, I know all is well with you, and I hope you are enjoying the current weather you have, whatever it may be. Vancouver had an odd weather the past week, so needless to say, I am enjoying the Sunny Singapore weather when I came back! But of course, powder snow weather is (and should always be) a welcome experience, especially if it happens to look something like what is in Tromso, Norway. In particular, when I had the chance to visit the Tromsø University Museum, I must say that the snow added so much dramatic effect from the outside, that it made the whole inside experience of the museum even more climactic.
Probably almost the same as the Tromso Polar Museum (Polarmuseet), the Tromso Museum is the oldest scientific institution in Northern-Norway, and it being visited by around 80,000-90,000 visitors annually, it’s one of the museums you should not miss out on. I am not really a big fan of museums, but this one, I can say that it’s worth the time and enjoyment. Not only does it show exhibitions and events of Nordic life and the country before and now, they also have some pretty phenomenal showcase of the geology of the northern lights! Of course everyone is a lover of the northern lights, and this museum shows so much details, it’s practically like a free course of what you need to know and learn about the Aurora Borealis. It would be really good if you go here first before you book a Northern Lights excursion tour so that you have the geeky familiarity of what you need to know to appreciate the lights even more. It sure helped me worship the lights more, even with all the shivers and bone-numbing coldness. Lol.
From the outside though, it looks a bit plain and simple, particularly because it’s white and super simple. However, from the inside, it’s all Aurora explained. Also, you’ll be able to find permanent exhibits about the political struggle for recognition of the Sami people in Norway. I like how the museum looks so classic and clean, even with some dioramas and statues of animals and all. I also like the fact that the museum personnel here are really very kind and provided us with more than necessary assistance when we asked for some help. Although it’s a pleasant 30-minute walk from their city center, I should say that this Tromsø museum should not be missed, but if you don’t have the time to do so, then you better spend some random time to view the photos here – I’ll give you a virtual tour instead. :-)
