Singapore Philatelic Museum: Want to be a Powerful Philatelist?
Singapore Philatelic Museum & National Museum of Archives
Ever
since emails became a thing, most of us have forgotten the insatiable
impression that traditional snail mails can bring. I mean, “You’ve got mail?” Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan must have
gotten it right, right? But I could say, so does Harry Potter? Privet

scene, yes?
In any
case, I just wanted to share that Singapore is cool with anything old school.
And this includes snail mailing. Yes, ever since I moved to Singapore a couple
of eons ago, I’ve learned to see the convenience and ingenuity that a post can
give you, especially when you receive a surprise mail from a loved one. True
story! So imagine my surprise when I found out that Singapore has their own
museum for such thing: the Singapore
Philatelic Museum (Chinese: ć–°ĺŠ ĺťˇé›†é‚®ĺŤšç‰©é¦†) which is all about postal history of
Singapore and its stamps.
Located along
the Coleman Street in Singapore, the Singapore Philatelic Museum has some
pretty awesome permanent galleries, and themed galleries throughout the year.
Moreover, these galleries often include displays from the private collections
of prominent philatelists. When I have gotten a chance to visit… bullocks! They
had the Harry Potter Wizarding fair! I have to say, it’s not only a pretty good
reminder of the United Kingdom, or the original Harry Potter Studios to be more
specific, it’s a fantastic opportunity to see how timeless and terrific these
stamps and letters are. Plus, they even have the Chicken And Egg: A Fowl Tale
exhibition, Shaking It With Shakespeare Exhibition, and The Singapore Journey:
50 Years Through Stamps.
I am
sure that all the artists, letterers, and creatives out there would be
impressed by this 19th century building-turned-museum. Now, as a traveler, as
an expat, or even as a curious potential enthusiast, these galleries that
showcase diverse areas such as science, technology, history and culture, are
indeed worthy of some form of “stamp” of approval! Thumbs up! Likewise, the
museum has a sub-post where you can actually buy stamps and post out your
letters! So, need not worry… because you can even get your own personalized
stamps made here too.
