When The Seven of the Best Singapore Cafes That Straight Up Rule the City was published, I was greeted with princely responses from café-coffee lovers from all over Singapore, who thumbs-uped the ultimate listing. One of the folks who read the post was the superlatively awesome torch bearer of My Awesome Café, who summoned me to revisit the place and see what they have been up to. A couple of months later, as fortune would have favoured the busy (me), I found myself returning to this spot along Telok Ayer thrice within the same week, fortified with a huge appetite for some delightful food and caffeine gusto.
Telok Ayer Street happens to be that bar – café – resto space in Singapore that covers a distinctive culture of cool, unconventional, and everything-in-between. The non-mainstream and non-conformists of Singapore’s F&B industry flock this area, because the profusion of wonderful top rated and must recommend restaurants, coffee shops, bistros are all here. Juxtaposed between all that is great in Telok Ayer, this historical shop house, with its culturally diverse crowd, friendly-homey atmosphere, and overall cool vibe, surely stands out like a light house.
Anybody who knows how important it is to get your café exteriors and interiors right would agree that My Awesome Café is an evident winner. You could not find a single morsel of mistake with their overall coffee bar vibe, as seen in how their unfinished concrete walls and vintage fixtures exuded imaginative stories for everyone. It is no wonder why their space is always filled with people from all walks of life – expats, westerners, locals, families, and friends – all enjoying its familial universe.
Food-wise, from plating down to the platter selections, everything is kept as awesome as possible. The buzzing menu choices are consistently excellent, and perhaps one of the quirkiest you’ll see in this side of the world. Their customer service makes you particularly excited to enjoy a contemporary kick to how café hospitality should be done. Must Try: Drinkable Idea “I Am Awesome” Bulb.
Telok Ayer Street will never be this awesome without this café. It’s good the first time you visit, but even more so in your next visit. Overall, this classic-cool coffeehouse combo of fabulous coffee and hipster west + east atmosphere might just be the right place for you to hang out – once, twice, or too many times. I would gladly volunteer to work here on weekends just to soak up the remarkableness of the food and crowd. See you?
