St. Michael's Street and St. Michael's Gate in Bratislava
St. Michael's Street and St. Michael's Gate in Bratislava
Can you
imagine a lighthouse inside a city center? Nope? Well, imagine no further as my
imagination tells me that it could possibly look like the St. Michael's Gate in Bratislava. It’s neither a lighthouse nor the
centre of a city center, but it sure entertains my mind's eye.
In Bratislava, Slovakia, this gate that can be seen even from
afar is the only city gate that has been preserved of the medieval
fortifications and ranks among the oldest town buildings. It was built around
1300 and has the statue of St. Michael and the Dragon was placed on its top.
The tower houses the Exhibition of Weapons of Bratislava City Museum.
On the sixth floor of the tower there is a balcony that offers a magnificent view of the Old City, the Castle, and surrounding areas. We walked past the Michael's gate before actually noticing it was that. Haha! Our stomach aches and thirsty shopping hands are on the loose, and we couldn’t help ourselves but to check out the different souvenir shops, luxury shops, and restaurants around the area. Apparently, it’s a “lighthouse” of life events within this city, as there is profusion of stuffs going on around the area. It’s one of the streets you can hang around for a considerable amount of time. Be sure to check it out when in Bratislava.
