Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe: Traverse Around the Network of Concrete Holocaust Landmark

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
If here in Singapore, there’s such a thing as the Kranji Memorial, in Germany, they have the Memorial
to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which happens to be in Berlin. Also known as the
Holocaust Memorial, this 4.7-acre site is covered with concrete slabs and
arranged in a crisscross pattern, you’re bound to feel the maze runner in you.

This place is one block south of the Brandenburg Gate, which
is quite walkable if you happen to be around this area. Basic and square as it
may seem, it exudes an enigmatic lure that one may not quite put a finger
easily. It is said that the design is aimed to create an uneasy, confusing
atmosphere, and represent a purportedly ordered system that has lost touch with
human reason. I visited this place at midafternoon, just as the quick drizzle had worn-out. Though GoPro or a panorama shot would most likely suffice, I wish I had a drone to take an aerial shot of the memorial. The view of the path between the rows of stelae, shows uneven walking surface, like small humps. Everyone around here was walking around and investigating the depth of grey that can only be emphasized by the Holocaust Memorial.

There’s also an adjacent information center which is an
underground museum, which is located below the field of pillars, showing an
exhibition on Nazi terror in Europe. Truly, another powerful and personal place
– reminds me of the time I watched the Schindler’s list.
