Five & Dime Eatery, River Valley Road

If looks could kill, you’d drop dead on the spot upon entering the Five and Dime Eatery along the River Valley Road. This eatery-café-resto somewhere around Somerset area, is one of the prettiest favorite places you can ever uncover in this side of Singapore, and to be actually juxtaposed with the rest of the buildings nearby makes it even more queenly.

This is not for the MRT pursuers, because the only easy way to get to this place is via bus, cab, or car. It’s roughly around 30 minutes of walking from the Five & Dime nearest MRT line, Somerset, which is too far off. Anything not walkable via the MRT in ten minutes or less is deemed like remote, in Singapore standards at least. Best time to go, a little before lunch time and just before dinner if you are just walking in – better to do reservations because the place gets pretty packed during peak hours. Wholesome, friendly, cozy atmosphere. It’s nice how the Five & Dime Eatery is one of the very few food places along this stretch of road, it makes it all exclusive and upmarket. In some way, it reminds me of the Prive Cafe in Keppel Bay Vista and Arbite in Serangoon Gardens, such that it looks like it’s made for the sole purpose of satisfying brunch + big groups.

The Five & Dime has this wide artsy take on the place, bright ambiance, and an awesome resto-counter that you won’t easily take your eyes off it. The two huge boards at the back, with details about the day’s stuff, schedule, and signature highlights makes you look forward to spend the whole day just cozying up at this place. Must try: Salmon Rocket, Beef Tataki, Cafe Mocha.

Gone are the generations when you have to go far off west, east, or north side just to find a preppy-friendly wholesome restaurant place. It’s nice to dine in Five & Dime, indeed – the place for everyday events that you may not have realized you need to organize and have. Recommended for: Birthday treats, couple-ups, family gatherings, friendly catch-ups, solo coffee stops, and for people who are looking for that authentic nice mix of local audience.
