Wow, Philippines: Why Obsess over Puerto Princesa in Palawan
Why Obsess over the City in a Forest, Puerto Princesa
As I hurry up and write this one, amidst the afternoon scorching
heat here in Singapore, I can’t seem to get Puerto Princesa out of my mind. There’s this
gut feeling of wanting to spend Christmas amidst the afternoon scorching heat,
accompanied by sociable sea waves and a fresh coconut drink. It’s not summer,
but it sure sounds like an awesome celebration to have this daydream visual
become a tangible reality. Christmas carols with the sea waves as background
music, yes. Christmas sea food buffets with fishermen and locals, yes.
Christmas gift-givings at the beach front area, yes. Yes, that kind of good gut
feeling, and you know when you have this, it just has to be done, right? The
scorching city sun in Singapore is nagging me to try a different approach to
sunlight. So, in less than twenty four hours after landing in Manila, I packed
my rusty old backpack and headed south from hometown to finally visit one of the most
talked about cities on Earth, Puerto Princesa City.
The Philippines houses more than a handful of beautiful,
mysterious, and pristine islands that are worth experiencing, and this cleanest
and greenest city is one of the high priority ones worth the travel. With UNESCO World Heritage stamps, New Seven Wonders of the World
Title, and several notable
awards under its belt, this princess-like maiden city is one of the few
places in the Philippines that every Filipino, and other well versed
travelers from all over the planet, would like to include in their bucket
lists. Christmas or no Christmas, sun or no sun, it’s just the place to be.
It’s a melting pot of various ethnicities, local and folk cultures have been
preserved with so much precision and excellence. It’s just a fascinating sight
to be part of. From exotic food trips, uncanny “cocoon” experience, animal
go thrus, firefly watching, and history filled landmarks, the whole Puerto Princesa travel
experience is intensely interesting. Christmas is over and it’s almost a week
after the New Year, let’s have a virtual toast with those coconut drinks and daydreams.
