Zurich Royal Döner: Why Try Turkish in Swiss
Royal Döner: Why Try Turkish in Swiss
It’s probably a lot of things, but I don’t know why all of a
sudden trying out Turkish food in Zurich is a must do in
my Switzerland
travel bucket list. Frankly, it was never on my list. But yes, sometimes life throws
you lemons, other times its Turkish food. One thing I’m sure of - the Mediterranean
smell of the döners making its way
out of the Turkish restaurant was so forceful that it pushed me to redirect my
path inside the Royal
Döner. Best spontaneous food
choice as yet.
You know how you kind of get preconceived notions about how a
food or presentation will or should look like? That’s the good thing about this
resto; it’s all about breaking that mold. The Royal Döner is the largest döners kebab production
company of Switzerland. I sure didn’t know that Turkish cuisine had
a lot of influences, not only within Central
Asia and Middle East, but also
those of Western Europe. Nice to
know, yes. Which is probably why it sure don‘t scream Turkish restaurant at
first, given the style of the logo is very royal-like. Cobalt and Gold, crowned
with stars. The Food Menu also is different, simple and clear-cut. The façade
reads: 1001. All maroon and wide open. It’s at St.
Gallerstrasse, where all the good foods and interesting hotels can be
found. Best way to go is by foot, same as the rest of Zurich.
Shawarma = Arabs, Gyros = Greeks, Kebabs = Turkish, döners are very similar, from the presentation down to the ingredients,
but for some reason, taste-wise, I’d go for this one anytime. The smell is not
too strong and the spice is not too dominant. It’s an easy favorite. So are the
Falafel
Box, and their version of Börek, which is
made up of Hack Fleisch, Spinat, and Kase. German terms for: ground meat,
spinach, and cheese. It’s fascinating to eat at places like this sometimes; you
get to see how influences from different cultures truly mix together,
especially if they seem unlikely combinations. Like for the Royal Döners, it’s
Turkish meets Swiss, with a whole lot of old and new influences, from how the ingredients
came to be, to the restaurant-pub like venue, down to the other details like
friendliness of the Turkish - German speaking chef.
If you go to a new place, it’s always a default to say that you must try local food. But with this kind of mantra, sometimes, we miss out on good ones. Fusions, remakes, spin-offs, unrelated foods that are just around the corner. There’s just too much culture and history to try out over these kinds of foods that makes them worth the stomach spontaneity. See for yourself over some Royal Döners.
