Malaysia Photo Essay: Malacca, the Historic State
There’s a very good reason to see Malacca, the third smallest state of Malaysia. A few years ago, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and we all know that when it's UNESCO approved, it’s always a good one. My recent trips to several cities (more on this on my next posts) have started to trigger my attraction towards rich historical influences. These are the things, places, or people, with historical effects from different cultures – mixing own with others, mixing beginnings and ends, mixing causes and effects.
Like how a city is built, not in a day, but in a century full of war and colonization. Or maybe, like how an invention is made, not in a moment, but through years and years of trial and error. Everything about this idea is too compelling to ignore.
Now, take Malacca for example. Knowing that this small state has been hugely influenced by the Dutch, Portuguese, and British is just an incredible thought. Seeing how these European influences are immersed in Malaysian soil and how Malaysians are able to get their act together in ensuring they have their identity of their own is indeed a historic thing to be part of. You can see these on their structures, art, and even a little bit on their traditions.
