Haw Par Villa Dragon World in Singapore
Haw Par Villa Dragon World in Pasir Panjang Road
Haw Par Villa, also known as the Tiger Balm Gardens, is a spooky theme park located along Pasir Panjang Road that has over 1,000 statues and 150 giant dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, and strong illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism. "Haw Par" is based on the Aw brothers' personal names - "Haw" and "Par", which literally mean "tiger" and "leopard". It’s probably the best travel go-to place this Halloween, because it has this slightly disturbing atmosphere that can be amusing.
The Haw Par Villa is just right beside the Haw Par Villa MRT Station. It’s very convenient to go here, because once you exit this Circle line MRT, it’s literally a few steps from theme park’s entrance. The best time to go here is during late afternoons, as the dusk atmosphere adds a strange and spine-chilling twist to the whole place – it’s full of gruesome depictions of Hell in Chinese mythology and Buddhism.
The place is all about scary dioramas of scenes from Fengshen Bang, The Twenty-four Filial Exemplars, Legend of the White Snake, Romance of the Three Kingdoms; some statues of mythological figures, such as the Laughing Buddha and Guanyin, and historical personages such as Jiang Ziya, Su Wu and Lin Zexu. There are also 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiacs to see here. The depiction of each diorama is done with bursting amount of weirdness – guaranteed to give you the creeps one way or another. I insist, go here before dusk hits home, and it’s guaranteed that the overall theme park experience will be more than unforgettable.
As scary as it is, this theme park is one of those you won’t easily forget, because it’s so unique. Maybe, not the place you’ll like to come back every so often, but yeah, it’s a place you certainly won’t forget. On a different light though, the Haw Par Villa is also about learning Singapore’s culture on Confucianism, Buddhism, and Chinese Mythology with a different kind of intensity. Official scary story from this place? None that I know of… yet.
