The House of Robert Timms

The House of Robert Timms in Orchard
The House of Robert Timms along Orchard Road doesn’t immediately sound like an Australian twang coffee place - that is if there is any such place. Haha. But, this fine coffee house is actually recognized in all of Australia as one of the few cafes to pursue. This is most probably because of the fact that it’s founded by Sir Robert Timms, Australia’s Coffee Pioneer. And now, this house makes everyone’s heart here in Singapore palpitate a little faster – all for the love of good coffee.

Although the nearest MRT Station going here is the Somerset Red Line, The House of Robert TImms is just along the Orchard Road. The exteriors of the house won’t initially give it away as a coffee shop, but instead, it looks like an aristocratic store for coffee machines. You’ll see several displays and some waiters standing in front of the entrance, encouraging people to check the place out.
Good thing that the faint scents of brewing coffee will make anyone stop, look twice, and realize that this is the café place to try. Best time to check out the place: mid-afternoon to early evenings when the place is not too crowded, yet not too completely empty either; just the perfect backdrop for the perfect coffee siesta.

The relaxed crowd who normally chill here pairs well with the rest of the interesting details found in the house. The cozy chairs and butter-colored atmosphere makes the wall art and extroverted space all the more relaxing. The place definitely calls for those chill sessions, small-talk gatherings,Sunday dates, and maybe even some classy meet ups. It’s the type of place you won’t spend long hours though, which in this case is a good thing. It’s a good jumpstart point for the rest of the day.
The food and coffee range are diverse – Australian and Western cuisines are the standard, of course. They have this kangaroo meat, that’s an interesting try. From Prosciutto and Grilled Pineapple Wild Rocket Salad, to Giant Alcohol Macaroons, the choices are all good. But for quiet coffee lovers, I always strip it down to the basics – good Australian coffee, yes indeed.

No need to admit, but there are just more than a handful of café joints along the Orchard and Somerset areas; but, this also doesn’t mean that the House of Robert Timms cannot compete. It’s on a completely different league of good quality Australian coffee and experience. It’s a pioneer and a popular choice for a very good reason – it’s worth coming back for.
