Nagore Durgha Shrine, Telok Ayer Street

Nagore Durgha Shrine in Telok Ayer Street
So after we stopped by some local coffee chain around Telok Ayer,
we decided to explore the vicinity. This financial district is truly busy, with
all the horizontal structures towering from left to right. There are a lot of
food chains and retail shops on every corner too. But, on one central turn, we
found a charmer landmark that’s just a pleasant surprise: the Nagore Durgha Shrine.

This Indian Muslim temple can be associated with the Telok Ayer
Green. It’s just beside it. So from the nearest MRT, Raffles, it’s about 10
minutes of energetic walking. Once you turn past the corner, you’ll be gripped
by how the façade stands with so much history and Indian architecture.

It’s unlike any other Indian or Muslim shrine you see here in
Singapore. Although it dates back to as early as 1800s, the overall structure’s
simplistic details and venerating quality of architecture makes it look
timeless. It is in fact one of Singapore’s National Monuments. Now though, it
is also being renovated to make it as an Indian Heritage Center similar to the
other major races here in Singapore.
The idea of preserving a historical Indian heritage in the middle of a predominantly Chinese area shows how much Singaporeans value multiculturalism. Even if it is surrounded by Chinese-inspired gardens, temples, and establishments, the way the Nagore Durgha Shrine stands out with influence and immortality makes you appreciate the flavor it brings to the whole multicultural scene.
