The Great Singapore Haze

The haze in Singapore is far from improving anytime soon. You see, Singapore has been enveloped by hazardous haze for more than a few days now and this is the very first time in their near-perfect eco-friendly society, and even in their history for that matter, to have experienced this kind of alarming state. The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reached above the Hazardous level and this red dot is turning gray from all the forest fire smoke of Sumatra, Indonesia.

We have been bombarded with hourly reminders and news on the state of things here in Singapore, and in a matter of days, the haze has challenged Singapore’s fate on lifestyle, travel and tourism, and action. With much respect to the Singapore government, they are doing absolutely everything possible to alleviate the airborne pain; still, the readings still continue to fluctuate upwards reaching 'Life threatening' levels a few days ago. With “The Great Singapore Sale” comes “The Great Singapore Haze”, as this can last for weeks even months depending on the changes in weather.

It’s not the typical
city smoke from cars and buses. Singapore has pre-Armageddon skylines and
post-war fog effects from every corner. Every person bids each one with gloomy
stares and unanimous smoky smell. Everything seems unreal but they actually
are.

From a travel vantage
point though, from someone who has experienced larger than life smog on a daily
basis - Philippines, and a few of Hong Kong, and China too, the hazardous haze in Singapore is another eye
opener that’s worth understanding – that is, understand the value of
appreciating and respecting nature – what you reap is what you
sow. Taking pictures of every haze day makes you see clearly that
it’s important to mess with nature the right way. There’s karma in everything.
