The Wat Si Saket – What To See In Vientiane's Oldest Temple
The Wat Si Saket - Vientiane's Oldest Temple
This is quite remarkable, because not only is it a prominent temple, it also has the oldest surviving monastery in Laos. Plus, there’s a museum complex made of crumbling temple and monastery compound. Saving history to build history = resourceful, right?
Once you enter the place, the first thing you’ll notice is the tranquility of things. If you’ve been to more than a couple of temples in your lifetime, from Chinese temples, Muslim temples, and Buddhist temples, you’ll start to distinguish the different vibe of silence in each one. But in this place, there’s something more unique than the way things are. It’s neither the scary kind nor is it the weird one; it just feels distinctive. It’s the type of silence that’s best experienced for yourself.
Another interesting part to see and learn from is the museum. The place has a lot of information on the temple’s historical journey, as well as photographs and memorabilia of how everything came about in Laos. Camera is off-limits though, so better bring your brain memory to store everything. Overall, visiting Vientiane entails a lot of temple trips to fully understand and appreciate Laos’ rich and humble culture. Wat Si Saket is one of those that you won’t want to miss.
