Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar
Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon
Yangon in Myanmar won’t be as remarkable as it is without the Shwedagon Pagoda. There are so many pictures of Burma, aka Myanmar, which are trying to depict the depth of this country, but nothing compares to the real thing. It’s better to see this one in real live view rather than in pictures, I tell you. The Shwedagon Pagoda is way way way up there compared to other pagodas in Myanmar. See for yourself - should be coined as "Pagoda Passion".Here are some Shwedagon Pagoda history and facts for you, not that you need convincing or anything: 1.) this has existed for more than 2,600 years, making it the oldest historical pagoda in Burma and the world - the pagoda is even listed on the Yangon City Heritage List. Ancient awesome! 2.) It’s called so many names: Shwedagon Pagoda; Shwedagon Paya; Shwe Dagon Paya; Shwe Dagon Pagoda – although almost the same spelling for everything 3.) At the very top of the pagoda’s spire is a diamond orb - a hollow gold sphere studded with 4351 diamonds (1800 carats). On the very tip rests a single, 76-carat diamond! Bling bling Burma!
The Shwedagon has become an outstanding historical landmark, yet it remains to be a Buddhist temple. For the most part, you’ll see Myanmese from all walks of life praying and spending most of their time here to meditate, relax, and appreciate.
Won’t need to spoil you with words so let me just highlight that the photo galleries, the temples, the Buddha statues are just abundant with brilliance. Everything looks refreshing and at the same time raw: pure talent tthese Myanmese people have.
Be sure to allot at least one whole day to spend your time in seeing the whole Shwedagon Pagoda. Spend some time; get immersed. There are four covered walkways and an amazing Stupa with so much details and surprises to keep you engrossed for the most part. And then there are the people – the Burmese, Myanmese, the monks, and people from all walks of Yangon, or maybe from all walks of the worlds – seeing, feeling, understanding the glory of Shewadagon.
