Brunei Chinese Temple

Situated around the near middle area of the metro, Brunei’s Chinese Temple is a breath of fresh air. It’s one of the least discoveries you’ll ever think of when you visit Brunei. But good enough, this does not fail in comparison to other Chinese temples.

Brunei’s populace is predominantly Muslim, so it’s almost guaranteed that mosques and prayer halls are the norm here. Surprisingly, they also have Christian churches, Hindu temples, and Chinese Temples. Chinese temples are like needles in a haystack – it would be difficult to find it, as mosques are seen everywhere. This actually makes you appreciate the value of religion and faith in general; and not only does it add wonder, it also adds diversity, belief, and purpose.

Luckily, I found one needle in this Brunei haystack. This Chinese temple looks so solemn and unpretentious amidst the busy streets around the city. The temple is at the corner part in the central city, so it’s really a piece of good luck if you manage to find it. It’s not the top most visit spot you would go for when you visit Brunei, but certainly it’s not a fail if you visit. It is (for sure) interesting enough to visit, learn, and experience. Interesting statistic: according to Wikipedia, Brunei only has 3 Chinese Temples to date – imagine?

Inside, you are immediately transported into a different domain. The unpolluted scent of the Chinese incense and the mandarin reds and golds shall bring your feelings and imagination to the Forbidden City of Beijing. Everything looks as authentic as it can get.

One of my personal favorites is the tiles with some sort of Chinese myth painted on it. It’s found around the four corners of the temple and its whole meek creativeness vibe makes you want to read and know about the whole thing. So, spare some time for this good find. It’s not every day that you say that “Hey, I visited a Chinese Temple in a Muslim Country”. Come to think of it, it’s fascinating enough to say it, but it’s more interesting to actually learn and experience the whole thing. It helps you gain perspective on faith and possibilities.
